Clarity is a visual condition, not a complete assessment
Water may look clear because it contains few suspended particles. Microorganisms and many dissolved substances, however, cannot be identified by sight, smell, or taste alone.
WHO identifies microbial contamination from faeces as the greatest drinking-water safety risk. Such contamination does not necessarily create an obvious visual change.
Quality can change along the water journey
Water at the source may not have the same quality at the point of use. Storage tanks, pipework, connections, pressure, tap hygiene, and handling can all affect the final result.
Assessment should therefore follow the chain from source to point of use rather than rely on one sample or one device.
Turbidity matters, but it is not the whole answer
Turbidity can interfere with treatment and reduce disinfection performance. Good turbidity control supports the process, but low turbidity alone does not demonstrate compliance with all drinking-water requirements.
Microbiological, chemical, and physical parameters should be selected around the source, use, users, and applicable requirements.

- ✓Know the water source and surrounding seasonal or environmental changes.
- ✓Inspect tanks, pipes, taps, and storage points regularly.
- ✓Do not conclude safety from appearance, odour, taste, or one meter reading.
- ✓Use relevant laboratory testing when water is intended for drinking or its condition changes.
