Know your water source before choosing technology

Piped water, groundwater, surface water, rainwater, and seawater have different characteristics and risk pathways.

Different sources bring different challenges

Piped water has generally been treated, but point-of-use quality can still be influenced by the network, storage tanks, and building plumbing. Groundwater interacts with geology and surrounding activities, so its mineral content and other parameters can differ from one location to another.

Surface water is more exposed to weather, runoff, turbidity, and organic loads. Rainwater is influenced by air conditions, catchment surfaces, gutters, storage, and handling. Seawater contains high levels of dissolved salts and therefore requires suitable desalination, pretreatment, and post-treatment.

The source name is not enough to design a system

Two wells in the same area may not produce identical water. Piped supplies may also vary over time, pressure, and conditions after entering a building. Designing from the source label alone can produce a system that is undersized, unnecessarily complex, or unable to address the main risk.

Assessment should connect water-quality data, flow and pressure, usage patterns, peak capacity, space, energy, maintenance needs, and the target quality at the point of use.

Begin with source-to-use, not an equipment catalogue

WHO Water Safety Plans assess risk from the catchment or source through to the consumer. This principle makes clear that treatment is only one part of the complete system.

A more responsible sequence is to identify the source, map the risks, define the use requirement, test relevant parameters, and only then design and verify the technology.

Information to prepare first

  • Type and location of each water source, including any backup source.
  • Recent laboratory results and a history of changes in colour, odour, taste, or deposits.
  • Daily demand, peak flow, pressure, and intended water uses.
  • Condition of tanks, pipes, installation space, energy supply, operators, and maintenance practices.
