TDS is not the only measure of water quality

A TDS reading can indicate dissolved material in general, but it does not identify what is dissolved or prove that water is safe.

What does a TDS meter actually read?

Portable TDS meters usually estimate dissolved material from the electrical conductivity of water. The reading is useful for observing general change, but it is not a laboratory identification of every mineral, salt, metal, or compound present.

Two samples may have similar TDS readings but different compositions. Common minerals also contribute to TDS without automatically making water unsafe.

What can TDS not answer?

TDS does not demonstrate the absence of bacteria, viruses, or parasites. It also does not specify whether a particular dissolved substance is present at an appropriate concentration for the intended use.

A low reading is therefore not a safety guarantee, while a higher reading is not a verdict of harm. Both require context about the source and relevant parameters.

When is TDS still useful?

TDS can help track changes before and after selected processes, flag unusual shifts, or monitor membrane performance when read alongside other operating data.

Water-quality decisions require complementary physical, chemical, and microbiological testing selected for the intended use and applicable requirements.

Reading TDS more responsibly

  • Use a maintained meter and understand that the reading is an estimate.
  • Compare trends at consistent sampling points and operating conditions.
  • Do not use TDS as a replacement for microbiological or specific chemical testing.
  • Select a laboratory test panel based on the source and intended use.
