Why can water have colour, odour, or taste?

Iron, manganese, organic matter, chlorine, sulphur, pipework, and source changes can leave different sensory clues.

Colour and staining provide early clues

Iron may be associated with rusty colour, sediment, metallic taste, or reddish staining. Manganese may be associated with black-to-brown colour and staining. Similar appearances, however, may also be influenced by corrosion, sediment, organic matter, or work on the distribution network.

Timing helps an investigation: does the change occur in the first draw, after standing, only in hot water, or at every outlet? This information should be supported by appropriate sampling and testing.

Odour and taste do not always indicate the level of risk

A rotten-egg odour may be associated with sulphur compounds, but its origin could be raw water, a water heater, plumbing, or microbial activity. A chlorine-like odour may relate to disinfectant residual; controlled residual is also used to help protect water in distribution.

Earthy or musty odours may relate to organic matter or biological activity. Salty, bitter, or metallic tastes also have several possible causes. Sensory intensity does not necessarily correspond to health risk.

A sound diagnosis needs patterns and data

Record when the change began, which outlets are affected, whether it occurs in hot and cold water, and whether neighbouring users experience a similar condition.

Do not mask the symptom with fragrance or one cartridge without understanding the cause. Inspection of the source, tank, pipework, and relevant laboratory parameters helps determine the correct response.

When colour, odour, or taste changes

  • Pause drinking-water use when the change is sudden or the cause is unknown.
  • Compare water at the incoming source, after storage, and at several points of use.
  • Record the colour, odour, taste, timing, duration, and hot-or-cold condition.
  • Use laboratory testing and an installation assessment to confirm the cause.
